About this event

The moving image doesn't need to be bound to a two-dimensional plane, neither does it need to be solely a three-dimensional medium. Animation, with its variety of techniques, gives us the opportunity to break the boundaries between dimensions. By mixing cutout (2D animation) with the real world (stop-motion) we can explore and create meaningful relations between different types of images, we can play with perspective and perception of scale. Through the lens of animation we can explore new ways of thinking about the public space and the spaces we live in. In this workshop every participant, working alone or as a group, will create their own animations mixing cutout-animation and stop-motion, while learning about animation's most important principles: acceleration, deceleration, timing, spacing, anticipation, overshoot and persistence of vision.

Every participant should have their phone with the free app "Aardman Animator" installed. Assistance can be provided during the workshop installing the app. If it is impossible to use a phone, participants can still attend the workshop by making animation using optical toys. Francisco Lourenço is an artist who lives and works in Lisbon. Studied Painting but has always been working with moving image as an artist, animator, in visual effects and as a motion designer in cinema and advertisement. Through narratives derived from chance, their videos isolate moments of cosmic lucidity, depicting environments populated by characters uncertain of their place. In their work there is a deep appreciation for the inherent humor and emotion of the natural world.

Collage Working Club (CWC) is a weekly open workspace for artists working in the medium of paper. Organised in the format of alternate ‘drop in’ sessions and workshops masterclasses, it has both a regular facilitator, whilst also involving the artist community in the sharing of knowledge and skills. Providing materials, education and connections is the primary aim of CWC, and it will do this through the interdisciplinary art of collage as both an art form and a tool for personal growth.
